So, regardless of your current worldly situation, can you stand yourself? Is your Soul intact? Can you take pride in your core character? Do you enjoy your own company?
Be honest. Sit quietly for a few minutes late some evening and think about you. Forget about everyone else, even your loved ones. Think about You. Think about your Soul.
Are you satisfied with who you are deep down, apart from your material, career and family circumstances?
Think back to yourself as a youngster and then reflect on who you are in the present moment. If the comparison makes you wince or fills you with pangs of regret, I believe you have your answer.
To me that’s the key. To think back of yourself as a kid, maybe 10 to 12 years old when you were fully sentient, but not yet really immersed in the brokenness of the world. That was the true nature of your Soul. This was the fresh clean start—with all its immense potential—given to you by the Creator.
If you’d like to get back to that Spark of Greatness and truly manifest your God given destiny, then there is only one real path to do so.
And that path is Virtue—A Man’s Hardened Virtue. There is no other way.
The word Hardened here is key because this is not a world for soft men; at least if you want to justify your life and become the very best you can be.
Case in point is the present state of a wide swath of Western society. Have a look around you next time you are in public and pay attention to the physical comportment of the men you see. Or consider the state of the current social dynamic and compare it to the Greatest Generation as they say about those alive in the mid 20th century, specifically the men who fought in and won World War 2.
What a disgrace. What a waste of human potential.
This is what a world of soft men leads to—a society essentially flushing itself down the toilet and glorifying the stinking ride along the way.
And you will have no part of it.
So it is decided then—you will pursue Virtue and you will Harden yourself through Courage, Toughness and constant Improvement. Good.
For most of us it’s not overly complex regarding what we need to do to manifest our inherent potential. You and I both know it’s in there bubbling below the surface, obscured by shallow distractions and excuses. Everyone’s busy being busy and everyone has obstacles and difficulties.
As I’ve said many times before, I do believe there is personal greatness in every man of sound mind. But as the natural order would have it for 99% of us, we’ve got to work like hell to get there. It may take years of painstaking effort, but developing yourself up to your full potential will always be worth it.
This is something you will never regret, no matter the time and effort. It is your ultimate Destiny and it will set your Soul free. There is no more powerful and fulfilling manner in which to live.
If I was to confront you as a big brother, suddenly shove you up against the wall and ask you what the hell you needed to do in order to get your ass in gear, you’d get angry, shove me right back and tell it to my face.
It would explode right out of you wouldn’t it? You would push back with anger, pride and grit. And it would feel great in some respects. It would be a relief to get that off your chest and say it out loud. Your blood would be red hot and coursing through your veins. Energy and verve would be yours.
Sometimes in life you need to get angry to acquire the Courage necessary to pull the trigger on Right Action. So get angry at yourself or whomever or whatever you need to. Get angry and acquire the Courage you need to acquire to cut through each day with a vengeance.
Doing the right thing, even for the “wrong” reasons is still a good thing. Plus, pursuing Right Action will have a curative effect on your motivation if it is initially negative in nature. Right Action puts you in congruence with the Creator and His natural order. This is the smart man’s way and the path to long term reliable success.
So Harden yourself. Get angry and acquire the Courage to get moving and change your reality. Get busy and start bending the natural order in your favor.
There is nothing better the Creator would like to see.
So you’ve taken the first step and turned the corner. Good, it’s about time. Enough already with just coasting along day to day. At some point a man gets tired of himself if he isn’t breaking new ground.
Remaining stagnant is not healthy. Better to live your life as a rushing current—clean, vibrant and infused with the oxygen of self-improvement.
And by the way, this is the truth no matter what your age. It’s never too late. Don’t weasel out because you might be past your prime. Reclaim your life’s glory. It’s yours to be had, regardless of how old you are.
So now you know what you need to do. You’ve acquired the Courage and begun to take action. It’s exciting and the newness is invigorating. Your Soul is alive with a new sense of freedom and righteousness.
But then as time rolls on and the excitement fades; as life and circumstances begin to create obstacles and diversions, it’s going to take more than just Courage to keep on keeping on. It’s going to take Toughness.
You’ve become fed up and made the decision to tear after your very best. You have acquired the Courage and begun the journey. You’re off to a fast start and progress is good. But then as gains begin to slow and plateaus inevitably arise, you had better be ready to dig in for the long haul.
This is when Toughness needs to kick in. You’ve demonstrated some Courage and taken action. Good. But to break through plateaus and obstacles it’s going to take some grit. It’s going to take an indomitable spirit.
To me, this is where the real glory lies; in the toughness of a man’s character. When others will fold and others will work to find a way out, will you be stubborn enough to keep going? Will you be committed enough to ignore results and just keep going as a matter of principle until you do find a way through?
Will you? Or will you allow life to play its tricks, turn you around and send you back in the other direction? Is your situation really so different that you can justify abandoning the pursuit of your Life’s Destiny?
No it is not.
By definition your Life’s Destiny is your reason for being. It’s why you are here in this broken world. Your Life’s Destiny through the pursuit of Virtue is the ultimate path for a worthy life. If every man accepted this challenge and never quit, the world would be a much better place.
So harden yourself and toughen up. Keep fighting the good fight. Commit right now to never stop and never quit. There is no better way.
It is the struggle that will add depth and weight to your character as you pursue Virtue. Eventually you will begin to feel the tremendous intangible benefits of your nonstop pursuit.
Eventually you will begin to tip the natural order in your favor.
It’s going to take more than just Courage and Toughness. You are also going to have to get better; better at everything. To overcome obstacles that require more than a brute force approach, you will need to embrace the Virtue of constant personal Improvement.
But then this is what will make life interesting. This is what will add layers to your character. Becoming a better man and paring away at your pursuits will add power and leverage to your game. Pushing yourself to the wall, to the breaking point, will force you to find a way.
The Virtues of Courage and Toughness will push you to where you need to go rise above your current limitations. As you encounter obstacles and difficulties that impede your progress you will be pressed to start thinking outside of the box.
You have committed to never quit and thus at some point you are going to get stuck. Good. This is God’s way of nudging you to become better. There is always a way. There is always an answer. Have faith and thrash about until you find it.
Take a step back and reassess. Is there a way around the issue? Can you flip the obstacle to your advantage? Do you need to recalibrate your expectations and rework the fundamentals? Is there an outside resource available for help in the matter?
Whatever the answer is, you will find a way. You will get better. And then the next time you will do it all over again with more confidence and more verve. Every time you overcome it will add momentum and sophistication to your life. And getting better will get easier.
It feels great to get good at something and to get a taste of success. This is simply the natural order. It is pleasurable to do something well, to execute with finesse. This is an intrinsic pleasure or more appropriately perhaps, an intrinsic happiness.
Eventually you will begin to excel at a level beyond your expectations and you will come to realize the sky’s the limit. What used to be hard will become easy. You will hammer away at each day as a matter of habit.
And then circumstances will begin to present themselves and fall into place as if by magic.
A New Reality
Create a new reality for yourself. Pursue Virtue through Courage, Toughness and constant Improvement.
Embrace a Man’s Hardened Virtue and begin to take Right Action.
Never in your life will you regret pursuing what is right.
Even if your situation is a complete mess right now, there are some fundamental changes you know you have to make. Have the Courage to get started, even at the simplest level. And if you are simply stuck in a rut of mediocrity the same applies, pull the trigger and get moving.
Begin to turn your reality upside down. And take pride in the fact you have made a start; that you have begun the process. Courage is an invaluable masculine trait and one that will take you a long way to where you want to go.
And then resolve to tough it out. Very often in life, the answer is simply to never quit. If you know you are doing what is right, then commit to never stop. Outlast them all. Make it a war of attrition. Sometimes you don’t even need to be that good. Sometimes the answer is simply an indomitable spirit.
Toughness is also an invaluable masculine trait. Adding a good dose of Toughness to each day will add layers and density to your character. And like heat treating metal, it will harden you over time. Courage and Toughness will become your Personal Armor.
The final step then, is to sharpen your edge through constant Improvement. Make it a point to have No More Zero Days. Strive to become better each day. Even the smallest of improvements will add up over time.
Like compounding interest, it will be imperceptible at first, but then eventually there will be an explosion of growth.
Some of that growth will be explicit in nature, but the most important gains will be implicit. You will be curing your Soul from the ills of this broken world and you will know it.
Your Soul will become intact.
You will take pride in your core character.
And you will enjoy your own company.
All the best,
