Our culture here in the West has crossed over the line into one of the excess. The common belief, the common message is that more is better. Accumulate and consume—more, more, more.
Is this really a man’s destiny; to prove his worth and value through his possessions and through self-indulgence? Should a man base his life on desire and pleasure? Should he take the path of least resistance and avoid discomfort at all costs?
Have a look at yourself in a full length mirror in the morning before getting in the shower. Does your physique reflect the above paragraph? Are you slowly creeping your way into a physical manifestation of the above cultural values?
And what about your diet, your home, your financials, your mindset and the relationship with your woman; are they spiraling into the realm excess, lack of direction and weakness?
It is very easy in this hedonistic, media driven and coarse culture of ours for a man to lose his way. It is very easy to become soft and veer away from your ideal. After all, just about everyone else is headed in the same direction. The norm, by definition, becomes the accepted. It’s easy just to go along with the rest.
But then one day you will run into a man who will strike a realization deep in your core. This man will stride into your presence with power and verve. He will stand tall and project an energy that will affect your consciousness. And he will shock you out of your slumber.
It will be immediately obvious he is his own man and enjoys his own company. You will be able to see the effect he has on others and feel the effect he has on you. You will be physically and mentally intimidated. And because of this probably become somewhat resentful, but yet immediately admire and respect the man.
Holy shit you will think to yourself, this is what I used to be like in my prime; full of energy and charisma, lean and powerful. You will be filled with regret over your lost potential, mourn the wasted time and it will continue to sting.
And then in a quiet moment one day, you will clench your fists in anger. Enough is enough, you will think to yourself. I’ve had it with the normal and the accepted. I’ve had it with the easy path. And I’ve had it with being soft.
It’s time to go hardcore.
It’s time to Cut Away the Excess and Go Spartan.
You don’t need to be a bodybuilder, a power lifter or a competitive athlete. But you should develop and maintain some physical power and explosiveness. You’re a man after all.
Read my posts Go Hardcore and Cut Weight Like a Man and How to Remain Exceptionally Fit for Life. Both of these articles will take you to where you need to go if you find yourself soft and out of condition.
We live in the physical world and there is no doubt being lean, fit and powerful will be a tremendous benefit. It will help drive you forward and strongly affect the perception of others in your day to day dealings with people.
When it looks like you were carved out of steel, people will step out of your way and automatically accord you a higher level of respect. Men will implicitly understand that you “own your shit” as they say. Women will get into the habit of standing a little too close to you and their smiles and eye contact will last a little longer than they should.
This is simply the natural order and it is good. The benefits will be well worth it. Once you get there you will never look back and you will never let go.
Getting control over your physique and reverting back to your prime will lay the foundation for the rest of your life. It takes discipline, denial, mental toughness and patience to become and remain lean, fit and powerful. This is a man’s pursuit and worthy of your commitment.
And as you get to where you need to be and thrive, over time you will come to understand the same principles can be applied to the rest of your life. You will have concrete and manifest evidence in your physical being that you’ve got what it takes to leave the masses behind.
You’ve got the discipline, you’re capable of self-denial, you’ve got the mental toughness to excel and you can play the long game.
You will realize there is indeed an embarrassment of riches at your fingertips waiting to be had.
And that all you have to do is pare away to reveal the diamond core that lies within.
So you’ve been told your whole life to eat low fat and avoid cholesterol. Wrong.
Have a look around you. Take look at the physical comportment of the masses. Is the low fat, low cholesterol agenda working? Obviously not, as a society we are fatter and unhealthier than ever.
Just 50 years ago in the United States the average adult male weighed 166 pounds. Today that is the average weight of a much shorter adult female. What’s changed?
Certainly lifestyles and activity levels have changed somewhat. But if anything, people in society today are more health and exercise conscious than ever. Back in the 1960s men and women were not doing much formal cardio and gym work.
What has changed significantly is our diet. Not simply perhaps just the quantity of food we eat, but more so the quality. We’ve become a society whose primary source of calories now comes from carbohydrates.
When you eat, you’ve got to get your calories from somewhere. And if you avoid natural fats from animal based products, nuts and oils, those calories will have to come from carbohydrate based foods such as grains (which are wheat, rice and corn) and sugars.
And what are all carbohydrates metabolized to in your bloodstream in the end? They are metabolized into sugar. So basically, we’ve become a society of sugar burners for energy rather than fat burners.
For 2.5 million years, as hunter-gatherers we existed primarily as fat burners with one primary meal per day. It’s only in the last 10,000 years that we have become agricultural based societies where the majority of our calories come from carbohydrates, consumed several times per day.
But still, it’s only in the last 50 years or so with the pervasive low fat propaganda from the government and medical establishment that our metabolisms have spiraled way off course into the current state of affairs. That would be the equivalent of a 1 hour time span in a history of 1 year of evolution. In other words, we simply have not evolved to consume the level of carbohydrates (or sugar) we now consume today.
So once again the answer is to Cut Away the Excess and Go Spartan.
Minimize your carbohydrate intake—avoid grains and refined sugars. This means no bread, no pasta, no rice, no sugar and no processed foods.
Drink only water, tea and coffee.
Eat whole natural foods: meat, eggs, fish, vegetables, nuts and fruits. In other words, eat Paleo.
Go cold turkey or pare away over time. Whatever works for you. Eventually what you will find is you can eat your fill and you won’t be hungry every 3-4 hours as you are now. Your new habits will get you off the sugar based glucose-insulin cycle that keeps you constantly hungry and lacking in energy from sugar lows.
It will become easier and easier to go without eating as you convert to becoming a fat burner. Eating according to our evolutionary nature will adapt your body to burning stored fat, which will make you leaner and provide all the energy you need to go full throttle all day long.
So Cut Away the Excess sugar and Go Spartan—eat Paleo.
Symmetry, order and open space are the primary characteristics befitting the possessions of a man pursuing his very best each day. A clean, organized and razor sharp home will mirror him in his pursuits. Certainly, he will have a few nice things, but for the most part less is more.
The need to accumulate and display one’s extrinsic worth is shallow in my opinion. Of course, all is relative when it comes to possessions and consumption, but the need to surround one’s self with objects to project personal value speaks of weakness; weakness of character.
Again, there is nothing wrong with having and enjoying a few luxuries, but to focus on the extrinsic at the expense of the intrinsic will put you on the Hedonic Treadmill. It will always take more and more of what is outside of you to give you pleasure.
Pleasure is fleeting and subject to increased tolerance, just like a chemical stimulant. And because the source of pleasure is derived from exterior or material stimuli, it will always be subject to being taken away. You will get used to what you have and then begin to worry about losing it somehow.
This is not an existence worthy of a man of character. Focus instead on intrinsic values. Doing so will lead to happiness and peace of mind. Happiness is more durable than pleasure and since its origin is from within, not as easily taken away.
Also, instead of building up a tolerance over time as with the pursuit of pleasure, your happiness will grow. It will grow in terms of meaning and depth. And it will also imbue you with energy and lift you above the trifles of daily life. Everything simply becomes easier when you are truly happy.
So once again, separate yourself from the masses when it comes to material things and consumption—Cut Away the Excess and Go Spartan.
As the saying goes: clean house. Get rid of 50-80% of your possessions by paring away over time. Live in a Spartan household. Stop accumulating things and adjust your standard of living so that you can cash flow every month.
And then focus on the perfection of your character. Make progress here the real measure of your self-worth. Focus on Virtue, Excellence and Quality each day.
Always do what you know is right, conduct yourself at the highest level and produce quality results.
Conduct yourself as such and you will eventually close in on the perfection of your character; and you will rise above it all with purpose and happiness.
Go Lean and Hard
Go lean and hard across all areas of your life. Become agile, mobile and hostile when it comes to excess. Less is indeed more to a man of Vision and Purpose pursuing his very best. Do not weigh yourself down with too much bulk when it comes to your diet, physique and possessions.
These three areas of your life are extrinsic in nature, but it takes intrinsic fortitude to get them under control with purpose and precision. Doing so will lay the foundation for a much better future.
You will use the extrinsic nature of your existence to develop your intrinsic principles and virtues. And eventually you will see with your own eyes what a significant transformation you can manifest through your internal will and indomitable spirit.
As the saying goes, it all starts in your mind—with thoughts, then words and Right Action.
Make the commitment, say the words and then take action.
Cut Away the Excess and Go Spartan.
All the best,
