Stop thinking about your employment as a burden. Flip the script and embrace your work instead. Work is good. Work is noble. Your specific position and your employer should make no difference. Give yourself some credit for showing up each day and doing your best. And then take it from there to a higher level—distinguish yourself.
What if you took each day as an opportunity to pursue excellence and quality? How do you think that would add up over time? Don’t sabotage your complete development as a man by holding back for whatever reason. Use it as a tool to overcome; to overcome circumstances and yourself. And consider the bigger obstacle the latter of the two. Most often in life we are our own worst enemy.
Break away from the norm and make whatever you do as a profession an arena for personal excellence. Be consistent from the moment you wake until the moment your head hits the pillow seven days a week. Do not dilute your efforts. Let them compound. Make it a matter of principle. Have faith in your untapped potential.
Aim for the best version of you regardless of the activity. Make this a part of your identity. Make it a part of your core. Think about this for a moment. What better way could you justify your life? This is living in a glorious fashion is it not? To pursue excellence each and every day independent of the circumstances is true character. This is conducting yourself as a man of substance, as a man you can be proud of.
Take the high road as such each day and then eventually the magic of compounding will begin to take over. You will live on a higher plane. You will begin to tip the natural order in your favor. You will be living in the right way and you will know it. This is the key: living the right way.
Living the right way is living with righteous power. It is resilience, focus and energy. It will raise you to a new level in all that you do. It will add meaning and value to your life like nothing else. You will be living in congruence with the Creator and on your way to Becoming a Force of Nature.
Make it a point to become invaluable to your colleagues, superiors and clients. Enough with just working to rule. Enough with doing just enough to keep your job. This is not excellence. This is not distinguishing yourself. And in the long run you will only be hurting your character. You will be diluting your potential and dumbing yourself down. Your actions and mindset will become self-fulfilling; they will bleed throughout your being.
Becoming invaluable at work is the first step to turning the tables. Step up and become the man. Do it for yourself. Do it as a matter of personal honor. If you are recognized for your efforts then great, but if not, it is of no consequence. What is important is that you do the right thing for its own sake. And striving for excellence and quality is always the right thing when combined with virtue; even at an every day job.
Take an indomitable attitude. Just keep coming, recognition or no. Eventually it will make a difference. If you are able to clear a path for those around you as a consequence of your quest for personal excellence, then serendipity will begin to favor you. You will become the path of least resistance and favored by other people. Your profile will rise in their estimation and then so will your potential.
Are there any guarantees by becoming invaluable that everything will work out in your favor? That no one will try to take advantage of you? Of course not. But in the long run, a man of character who is an invaluable asset will rise. He will rise among his peers and then leave those who are unworthy in his wake. And if your current setting turns out to be unworthy of your efforts, you will simply move on.
As a quality man you will eventually find your way. Those of us out there that pursue excellence and quality know who we are. We know who we are and seek other others of like kind. A man of exceptional character is by definition a rare commodity. So when one is introduced to another it won’t take long to become plainly obvious. And each man will act to support the other and keep him around. Loyalty will become explicit and a brotherhood will form.
So take the initiative and become better at what you do, always. Keep forging ahead and improve yourself. Make it a never ending quest. Become invaluable at work as a matter of principle. Pursue your very best every day. You will never regret it.
Go All Out When Necessary
Sometimes it is necessary to go all out—to go beyond what is expected or even requested. This can especially be true during the startup of a new assignment or simply when the shit hits the fan. It can be a short term run at full throttle or a full year or more. A man needs to manage himself properly for the long term, but he should also be willing to push it to the limit.
Your attitude should be whatever it takes. Your colleagues, your superiors and your clients should know you’ve got their back; that you will take it to the wall if necessary. Just as a high performance professional athlete would. Make this a matter of pride. Send the message you will go hardcore when necessary.
Doing so will make your everyday work a piece of cake. It will raise your capacity and you will execute with composure, confidence and ease. Knowing you’ve got spare bandwidth because of your willingness to test your limits when you are called upon will distinguish you in the long run. This is a powerful feeling and a great way to carry yourself. You will enjoy exuding confidence, energy and standing tall.
Taking the initiative to go all out will also impress the hell out of other men of character. They will be drawn to you and you will gain their loyalty. Your will elevate your profile and you will also help your associates raise the level of their game. This is how you will form a band of brothers in your profession. By taking the lead and setting the standard.
Do the work that needs to be done and keep coming. Outlast them all. Even if what you are doing is unappreciated, do it anyway. Raise the bar for yourself. Do it for your own benefit. Over time you will leave softer men behind. You will harden your character and it will pervade all that you do. You will find your way.
Recognize and Learn From Excellence
There are many great men out there—men who execute at a much higher level and who are true professionals. Keep an eye out for other superior performers and learn from them. Let them inspire you to become better. Borrow what you can and make it your own. Be humble and make it a point to incorporate what works.
Most men of good character, skill and high performance are more than willing to share their expertise with another who is similarly motivated. Sometimes you can explicitly reach out and other times it is better just to observe and absorb. Don’t resent a better man, learn from him. Who knows, in combining his expertise or skills with your inherent qualities, you might even surpass him someday.
The goal is to become the very best you can be. A man who is humble enough to leverage the greatness of others, might one day surprise even himself. The Creator rewards commitment, He rewards humility and He rewards courage. Embody these characteristics and let them shine from within. Doing so will draw other great men to you and it will change your life. This is simply the natural order.
Remember as well that we now live in a time where the world’s experts are available to all. There are virtually no barriers to information any more. With a few keystrokes and a few dollars you can purchase a lifetime’s worth of knowledge and make it your own.
Make it a point to read every day. Get online and follow your interests. Visit the websites of those you admire and look for their recommended reading lists. Read to improve your professional skills. Read to improve your health. And read to improve your character. Just make it a point to keep reading.
Think of the man you could be five and ten years down the road if you make it a point to cultivate your mind every day by reading and listening to great men. Imagine how all this knowledge and personal development will affect your personal and professional life. Reach out and claim your God given potential. It all lies within your mind.
Seek out excellence and learn from it.
Here in the West most of us have no idea how great we have it. Despite the many faults of our society, we still have it far better than at any time in human history. All a man has to do is avoid some basic pitfalls, press ahead with fortitude and he can have a better quality of life than the kings and queens of just a century ago.
And the same goes for our work life as well. A hundred years ago, work was hard. Life was hard. I don’t think many of us really have any idea just how hard life was, even for our grandparents; and how hard they had to work just to survive. Never mind prospering as it is possible today with some concerted effort and intelligence.
Do yourself a favor and be grateful for your work. With the right mindset and some intelligent planning a man can leverage his work into a healthy and enjoyable life. Embrace your work and the opportunity it can provide for your personal development and quality of life. Take the contrary view and make every day at your job an exercise in becoming a better man.
Take pride in the nobility of your work ethic. Use your work as a tool to become something special. This will add tremendous meaning and purpose to each day.
Bleed virtue, excellence and quality into all that you do.
You will never regret it.
All the best,
