There is no doubt work can often be difficult, frustrating and challenging. But then so is the rest of life, is it not? We will all spend a huge swath of our lives working for pay and dealing with the ups and downs that will inevitably occur at our jobs. And what affects us at work will often bleed into our personal lives and vice versa.
It is certainly wise to maintain a certain distance or separation between work and our personal lives. Each is indeed a healthy respite from the other. As much as we need rest and relaxation to recover and enjoy the benefits from our labors, work itself can add tremendous meaning and satisfaction to a man’s life.
However, it will be next to impossible to become the very best you can be if you do not pursue your very best throughout your life. A complete man will set the bar high in both his personal and professional endeavors. True momentum and a true change in your Trajectory must pervade all that you do.
So learn to embrace your work. After all, this is what men do. We handle things and get things done. A superior man will conduct himself with a superior attitude no matter where he is. And he will do so, day in and day out.
Always Stand Tall
Take on each work day with some fire. Don’t just drag yourself into work. This is no way for a man to carry himself. Come in each day with energy and verve. Carry yourself with pride. Always stand tall at work; both literally and figuratively.
It doesn’t matter whether you enjoy your work or not. That point is irrelevant. For one thing, you are working for pay so it is a matter of honor for you to arrive ready to provide your best effort. You have an obligation to conduct yourself with excellence each day. This is an obligation to both your employer and to yourself.
Providing a half-assed effort is dishonorable. This was not part of the agreement when you accepted the offer for employment. If not explicitly expressed, it is implicitly understood that you would show up prepared to offer your best each day. This is the debt of honor you have to your employer (or client). If you are not prepared to honor that debt then you should leave.
And as a man you also have an obligation to yourself. This too is a matter of honor. Cheating your employer (or client) is also cheating yourself. Do not sully your soul as such. You cannot fool the natural order.
You might also want to ask yourself why you would you want to spend half of your life performing at a subpar level? This is no way for a man to live. If you do so it will absolutely affect the rest of your life. You will be damaging yourself. Inconsistency is unhealthy. It will break you down and lower the bar overall.
This is what the average man does. We are not here to be average. We are here to develop into the best possible version of ourselves. There are no half measures. Virtue, excellence and quality will not allow for it. This is a way of life for us.
So make it a matter of pride to show up every day and stand tall, especially when work gets difficult. This is when it really counts. Consider it an exercise in the perfection of your character. Let excellence and energy pervade everything you do. Make it a habit and part of your core.
In the end it is you who will benefit the most.
Add Explicit Meaning
Beyond your implicit development, add some hard core explicit meaning to your work by cash flowing each month. In other words, structure your finances so there is always money left over after your bills are paid. Combining the intangibles of your character with the reality of cold cash in your pocket will make it much easier to embrace your work and distinguish yourself among men.
It is amazing what a man can put up with when he knows that after each pay day there is always money left over. Somehow, a lot of the frustrations that would normally bother him will no longer have any significant effect. Water off a duck’s back as they say. And as the f-you fund grows over time so will outcome independence. Work will get easier and easier, regardless of the demands.
Savings and investment will provide you with choice. Choice is control. And control is power. With this state of mind you can look at work as a playing field to excel in and not just to survive. Work will become a challenge as opposed to a burden. This is a whole different mindset. This is a man’s mindset. And one you can purposely craft.
But once again your complete self will need to bleed between the personal and professional. To cash flow each month you will need to take control of your money. It is not so much how much you earn that matters, but how much you spend. And for this you will need to get together with your woman and work out what matters the most. Is it living at the highest possible hedonistic level or becoming more modest in your spending so that you can cash flow consistently?
Remember, there is no real job security anymore. Assume that at least one of you will lose your job to downsizing or consolidation in the next five years. And then plan your overhead and expenses accordingly. Make it an emergency to save $5000 cash and then a full year’s expenses. And from there financial independence is the goal.
Be smart and embrace your work by ensuring you cash flow.
Increase Your Capacity
Just as with pushing your limits in physical exercise, if you do the same with your work you will increase your capacity. Come in early, stay late and endeavor to become more productive. There is no need to kill yourself, but you should always be looking for ways to work smarter and become more efficient. Raise the level of your game and it can only be a plus. There are no negatives. Do it for your own implicit benefit.
Even if it makes no difference in your pay you should raise the bar. Doing so will develop you as a man. It will harden you and prepare you for when things do get difficult. When the hammer does come down and other men break, for you it will just be another walk in the park. And in the long run, becoming a superior performer will lead you to better places; both professionally and in your personal life.
It is good for a man to distinguish himself with his output and productivity. This type of attitude and energy will affect your whole life. Just as a superior athlete walks around with a certain swagger and style, so will you. And this is the type of psychological momentum that will propel your forward with ease.
It will be hard at first. You will get tired. But do not get discouraged. Maintain the courage and commitment to do as most men won’t. Push yourself when it is not necessary and you will eventually reap the benefits. Push yourself as a matter of principle. It will make you a better man.
Think of yourself as a powerful fighter jet. It will take tremendous energy to get you off the ground, but then once in flight you will be able to back off the throttle and utilize your momentum to maintain superior airspeed.
Yes indeed, become an elite performer by deliberately increasing your capacity for work.
Set your standards high and make it a matter of personal pride.
Make this an Iron Rule. Never complain at work about anything—period.
This is more of an attitude than anything else. It will certainly be necessary to share relevant negative information with your colleagues at times. Corrections will always be required in a professional setting. But make sure that all it is is information. It should be nothing more. Do not let anything get you down or be perceived as affecting your attitude. This would be complaining.
Become as serious as you need to be when discussing difficult issues. But make sure to exclude any other affectations. Doing so will raise your profile in the mind of your associates as well as maintain your own morale. Project nothing but professionalism and a controlled demeanor. Become untouchable and indomitable at work.
And always show up as a professional. Never bring anything personal into this arena. Never let anyone at work know you might be having a difficult time in your personal life. It will be better for them, help to maintain your profile at a high level as well as act as a pragmatic means of psychological compartmentalization.
In this way, work can provide you with a respite from whatever personal circumstances are causing you grief. Sometimes forgetting for a while can be good. It is good for you to know there is somewhere for you to go and something productive for you to do that can change your mind. This is healthy.
Let this Iron Rule of Never Complain apply to your woman as well. As with all aspects of a complete man it will pay to be consistent. Never complain at work, never complain about work and never complain to your woman. Complain to your dog or to a brother if you have to, but otherwise hold true to this rule.
Adopt this type of mindset and you’ve won half the battle.
Never Say Die
Stand tall, cash flow, increase your capacity and never complain. From there commit to never say die and you will become an unstoppable force. Bite down hard. Decide that you will never stop and you will never quit.
Embrace your work for your own benefit. Regardless of what you are doing or who you are working for, always be willing to grind it out when things get difficult. The focus should be on you. Nothing but good can come from your best efforts, even if things don’t work out.
You are setting the standard. And this is the standard that will eventually set you free. Doing the best you can possibly do each day will free your spirit as a man. There is something to be said for getting out there and letting it all hang out.
Make your work an arena of sorts. Create your own personal glory. Let the Creator see you excel and in doing so you will honor both Him and yourself.
Embrace your work and live a life of excellence.
All the best,
