So you’re deep into your quest and you’ve stalled out. It’s been a gut busting marathon and you’re no where near where you need to be. You’ve worked to Overwhelm Your Circumstances and made the strategic and radical changes you thought necessary.
But you’re just not getting it done.
Welcome to the club. No one said it was going to be easy, nothing worthwhile in this world is. You’re not the first man to hit the wall and you won’t be the last. Get used to disappointment.
Failure and difficulty are part of life. Everyone has their losses. Everyone. Even those people who are immensely successful get their head handed to them once in a while.
But there’s no question some people do seem to have the Midas touch; at least to get them to an enviable level of outwardly success. Good for them. Never doubt for a second, however, that difficulties will touch everyone, regardless of outward appearances.
We, however, are not concerned with the success of others. We are concerned only with you. Others will live their lives and you will live yours. You will Be Your Own Man and Enjoy Your Own Company. There is no better alternative. To do otherwise would be folly.
So the question then, is what are you going to do about your lack of progress up to this point? Despite tremendous effort and a never say die attitude, you’re still stuck. Or perhaps you keep making the same mistakes; whatever.
Your goal, your Vision is still a worthy one, that hasn’t changed. You’ve put everything you have into it and you’ve put your life on the line. But again, you’re just not getting it done and you’re beginning to fold.
The driving force behind your ambition is losing its hold over you. You remember it of course, but it’s now only words; there’s no Soul behind it anymore. And you’d better find something quickly because you can feel yourself letting go.
The answer in these situations is to brush everything aside and go stone cold hardcore.
Man up, harden yourself and Make Not Quitting Reason Enough.
Some Things In Life Are Simply Worth It
Let’s say you never actually make it to your goal. But your fight, your struggle is and will always remain worthwhile; there are indeed some things in life worth never giving up on.
Consider that much good will likely spin off of your pursuit as a natural consequence. Doing what’s right is its own reward, even if you can’t see any benefit in the immediate. Your Soul and character will certainly be the better for it.
Even if you don’t make it all the way to your destination there might still be tremendous reward. A worthy quest will most certainly produce many positives along the way; even if only intrinsic in nature.
And just as some things are worth believing in whether they are true or not, so are some things worth pursuing whether they are ultimately achieved or not. Fighting the good fight is always worthwhile.
So take a look around and ask yourself if anything good has come to fruition, even though you’ve not yet made it to where it is you want to be. My guess is that, if you’ve persevered with principle and honor, you will definitely see you are the better for it.
The natural order tends to work that way. If you work like hell at something, expending tremendous amounts of positive energy, in some way or some fashion that positive energy will find its way back to you.
Although it may not be in the form you expected, it will likely be that at some point you are the beneficiary of tremendous good fortune.
There are many unforeseen and fortuitous possibilities in this world. More than any of us could possibly imagine. And sometimes the Creator knows what’s better for us than we do. You will realize this one day when you see the hand of God reaching out and guiding you along the way to sweet serendipity.
And sometimes what you receive in return will many times over what you expend. Consider this the multiplier effect, just like in a free market economy where a dollar invested can produce many dollars more in wealth as it circulates through the economy.
Yes indeed, some things are simply worth it.
So Make Not Quitting Reason Enough and keep doing what you know is right.
Embrace the Glory
One of the greatest glories available to a man in this world is achieved by never giving in—by simply not quitting. It’s a quiet and personal glory, but can be one of a man’s greatest gifts to himself.
As I’ve written many times before there is something to be said for sheer will and perseverance. In the pursuit of a noble goal, they are indeed virtues of the highest order; virtues that will create a path to personal greatness.
Realize that not quitting will do to a man as heat treating will do to steel. The more often it is heated and then properly cooled, the harder it will become. And so it is for men as they pursue challenge and improvement.
It is for this reason we draw the parallel between men and steel. We live in a difficult world that without a doubt requires hardened men. And it is the challenges and difficulties of his life that will ultimately make a man who he is, not success. Success will simply reveal what lies beneath the surface.
So embrace the glory of not quitting. Thrill yourself with unyielding tenacity. Send chills down your spine as you continue to hammer away. Become indomitable and Make the Journey Its Own Reward.
Keep pressing and look for a weakness in whatever is holding you back. Even if you have to take a short breather to reassess, you’re still learning; at least what’s not working. There’s always another way and up to this point you’ve eliminated what doesn’t work. Sometimes it’s good to take a quick break and then take another run at it.
Or perhaps over time circumstances or people will change and what didn’t work before will suddenly have an impact. And because you just kept on keeping on simply on principle and pure guts, you will now begin to make progress.
And who knows. There are those who believe that we affect everything we interact with to some degree; what I would call bending reality as a force of nature. The natural order does indeed have an affinity for what is good.
Circumstances may not have to change on their own. It may be the glory and the good of your efforts that effect the changes you see. If you put yourself in synchronicity with what’s right, you may indeed bend reality at some point—if only you would embrace the glory of not quitting.
So Make Not Quitting Reason Enough and embrace the glory.
Hold the Damn Line
If you begin to sense things getting away from you or your forward progress is beginning to wane, then pull the trigger on your defensive fallback and hold the damn line.
Never give up any ground. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to take a defensive posture and just let circumstances or adversaries burn themselves out. Make time and attrition your allies. Gather yourself and add to your arsenal as you maintain your position.
Let the opposition wear themselves down. Or simply bide your time and leverage your efforts as circumstances change. This world has a lot of moving parts and is dynamic and unpredictable. Hold on and keep your eyes peeled for an opportunity to present itself. Be there for any opening that might occur. Stand your ground and be ready to strike.
Give yourself some time and ignore your emotions. If you simply can’t face moving forward because you’ve run out of gas so to speak, then dig in and at least hold on to what you’ve achieved. As the saying goes, don’t make any important decisions when you’re in a bad state of mind.
Make it a conscious decision to ignore your emotions when they begin to take over. Conduct yourself purely on principle. It shouldn’t matter what you feel like doing. Do what you know is right and in accordance with your Life Mission. Or at least, give yourself some time to gather your wits by holding the line and not taking any steps back through weakness. Become a mercenary to your objectives.
Perhaps your timeline was too aggressive; or perhaps there’s more to what you want to achieve than you anticipated; or it’s just going to be much bloody harder than you thought. This is life is it not?
Once again, hold on to your gains and recalibrate. Change your expectations, clear a wider path for more effort or simply catch your breath before diving back in.
A man needs to be willing to make adjustments as he goes through life. As long as you don’t give up, there’s nothing wrong with taking some time to get smarter, to strategize or to look for help or additional resources. But do yourself a favor here and work to keep what you’ve achieved while you do.
And consider the possibility that you might even be succeeding and yet not realize it. Simply by maintaining your current state of affairs there might be progress being made. You can never really know the state of mind of others or all the circumstances of a particular situation. There may be people out there you’ve convinced of your position or adversaries or obstacles that are beginning to break down.
So then do yourself a favor when you’ve hit the wall and at least work to hold the line. Dig in and hold on for dear life if necessary. Give yourself some time to recharge, resupply, and recover.
Take some credit for how far you’ve come and hold the damn line. The natural order of this universe rewards commitment. And sometimes not quitting and holding the line is all it will take.
You never know what is right around the corner.
Only Step Up Not Down
So you’ve decided then you will never stop in the pursuit of what really matters; it is now a way of life.
There are some things in life that are simply worth it.
You will thrive and embrace the glory.
And you will hold the line at bear minimum until you’re ready to strike forward again.
Whether it’s your Life Mission, One Thing or someone you care for that needs your help, you’ve decided not quitting is reason enough. Good.
But then there’s one more arrow you need to add to your quiver. There’s one more principle you will add to your core so that you can adapt and adjust to this complex and changing world of circumstances and people.
You will make it an Iron Rule to Only Step Up and Never Step Down.
As you develop and harden yourself, unforeseen possibilities may suddenly present themselves. Your interests and priorities may evolve. Perhaps it becomes evident you underestimated your true potential. Or perhaps new information and opportunities will come to light as you Cut Through Each Day with a Vengeance.
If any of these situations do occur, then as a dynamic man you must consider them. But make sure to reflect on your core principles and only make the jump to something new if it will be a definite step up—that by doing so you will be leveraging your previous efforts and accelerating the path to Your Life’s Destiny. And that you’re not just jumping ship to weasel your way out.
Be honest here. This is the key to avoid fooling yourself into changing course for the wrong reasons.
Make sure your new path or your new destiny will blow the old one right out of the water. Make sure there isn’t even a comparison.
If this is the case then by all means take the step up.
After all, as long as your Life’s Trajectory is headed upward and you are working to become your very best, that’s all that really matters. Reinventing yourself into something better is the smart man’s way.
And then down the road when you hit the wall once again and when it seems like you can go no further, you can Make Not Quitting Reason Enough.
All the best,
