As you look at yourself in the mirror do you like what you see? Are you where you want to be in your life? Is your character something to be proud of? Are you fighting the good fight and on your way to living clean and true up in the High Country? Would your Mom and Dad be proud of you right now? Is the Creator proud?
The fact is that many of us are not able to answer in the affirmative to the above questions at some point in our lives. Life in this broken world has a way of knocking us off course. It sneaks up on us a little bit day by day. It happens imperceptibly until that one morning in front of the mirror.
The stresses of work, family and culture can wear on a man over time. There can be a lot of demands in these areas pulling a man this way and that. It can be very easy to let these pursuits press your own needs to the back burner until you find yourself way off track.
There is the persistent bombardment from the media that the means to happiness and status is through accumulation and consumption. And even if you are not personally affected, your woman and children will constantly petition you to spend and consume. It’s only natural to want to make them happy and enjoy providing for them. So you do and then here you are in debt, with no way out—suffocating.
And then there are the pervasive and seductive pleasures available like no other time in history: alcohol, food, pornography, gambling, television and the internet. It is very easy to become addicted to any of these shallow distractions. There are virtually no barriers anymore.
Sometimes all that seems possible is just holding on for dear life. A man can feel smothered, trapped or corned. Maybe you feel you’re past your prime and it’s too late. Your fate is sealed and you might as well just accept mediocrity or worse from now on.
Perhaps you believe a break will come along someday to make things easier and that’s your answer. Or perhaps you don’t see a way out or upward and your coping mechanism is simply to hide from reality through distraction, the pursuit of pleasure or some form of inebriation.
We’ve all been there to some extent or the other. We are all human after all. Sometimes life and our own decisions can blindside us. No one is bulletproof.
But then one morning you find yourself in front of the mirror and you’ve hit the wall and you know it. You’ve dug yourself into a nice deep hole. And it doesn’t look like there is an easy way out. Even if your situation isn’t that bad, but you are just tired of being tired, where do you go from here?
No More Zero Days.
I submit to you that if you make the title of this article your Mission, it will change your life.
It’s as simple as that.
Make yourself and the Creator a promise that you will have No More Zero Days.
Regardless of anything else, success or failure, make the decision that you will have No More Zero Days.
Become outcome independent in a sense. “Play the game with total abandon” as my father used to say. Just get out there and get some shit done every day. Make that the measure of your success. Never mind what anyone else thinks or how much you regret your past, take a sledgehammer to each day from now on.
Your first thought as your feet hit the floor in the morning should be No More Zero Days. You know what needs to be done at this point in your life. Just ignore your current state of affairs and get to it. Pick at least one thing every day that will advance the ball for you.
If you were to drop all of the seductive pleasures listed above and take one step forward every day you will become twice the man overnight. Take it one day at a time. Decide to never take a day off. That’s not too much to ask is it?
You don’t have to kill yourself, just cut out the alcohol for example and do some sit-ups each day.
Limit your beverages to water, coffee and tea and read for 30 minutes before bed.
Turn off the stupid television and fix your home.
Quit watching other men run around in shorts playing with balls and get a part time job to pay down your debt.
Get rid of your big ass truck, sell your money pit of a home and start cash flowing each month for the same work—to hell with appearances.
You get the idea. The plan is to work the magic of compounding positive action. Start simply, by denying yourself from the shallow distractions that are holding you back and take the first step. It is that unimpeded first step that is the key. Follow that first day with a second day. And then keep at it no matter what. After all, it is now the Code you live by.
And then it will begin to happen. Action will give life to action. It is simply the natural order. It is the way in which the Creator designed us to operate. Lead a clean life and take action. Doing so will replace pleasure with happiness. Pleasure is fleeting and addictive, happiness is long lasting and resilient.
Harden yourself a little bit. Begin living like a man should. A man doesn’t constantly seek out pleasure. He seeks out accomplishment and experience. This is what leads to happiness. This is what makes a man good at being a man. This is what leads to a worthy life.
But you know what? Now that you are on your way and doing everything right, much of the same outside forces will continue to come after you. So expect it. Don’t be surprised and don’t be disappointed, it’s just the way it is in this fallen world of ours. Assume that the obstacles will continue to come at you.
The difference for you now, however, is you are a moving target. And that no matter what you will continue to have No More Zero Days. You will handle it all. You will brush aside what you can or you will go over or go around or fix whatever you need to fix.
And you will do this because you now have a Code, a Mission. You are still human and will still feel disappointment, regret and fear, but your philosophy for life will get you through it. You will always find a way.
And if you don’t, then you will simply start over. But then that is a story for another day.
All the best,
