Perhaps you’re not exactly where you’d hoped to be in your life at this point. It is crystal clear where you should be, but you haven’t quite cut it. You’re tired, worn out and frustrated. It all just kind of snuck up on you. Life has a way of doing that doesn’t it? There is disappointment and the knowledge that you have not lived up to your potential. Others have passed you by.
Take heart, because if there is disappointment then there is still desire and ambition. You are one spark away from lighting your life on fire; one decision away from achieving personal greatness. If you’ve still got the will and the spirit then you’ve still got what it takes to redirect your life’s Trajectory.
So let’s put the past where it belongs. This is the starting point and the first step on the way to the High Country. After all, as each moment burns it is of no more use. All that matters is the here and now and where you are headed. You will set the bar high and chase after your very best.
No matter where you are in the arc of life it is never too late to finish strong. If you are a young man you’ve got the advantage of time. As an older man there is the advantage of urgency. If the embers of unfulfilled potential still burn within, then promise yourself one thing when you finish this article—you will not stop and you will never quit, you will outlast them all.
Make a Decision
The assumption here is that you have a clear Life Mission, Life Vision and a must have One Thing. If not, then read Achieve Personal Greatness and put in the time and thought to purposefully craft your destiny. Having a rough idea of where you’d like to end up is not enough. Make it a razor sharp destination. As you develop there is always the option of making adjustments along the way. But be sure to know exactly where you are headed so you can pivot hard.
And pivot hard you will, because the Creator has seen fit to supply you with a mind that can reason and control its own functioning. Your mind can teach, train and activate itself. It is pliable and can rewire itself through self-directed activity. These are traits that are unique in the universe. A man’s brain is a miracle gift from the Creator. Remember this because next to your soul it is the greatest asset you have. There is unlimited variation and possibility ahead of you if you will just make a decision.
It is that simple gentlemen. Make a decision. The key though is to make it stick by finding something critical to tie it to. Find something with as much meaning and emotion as possible so that as the weeks, months and years pass you can always remind yourself why you started. Pull something from your life that will really stab you in the core. You should feel the weight of it literally pulling you into the ground as you think about it. If it makes you angry or fills you with regret even better.
Perhaps it is a birthday that has just come and gone. Another year of mediocrity, that has you finally fed up and angry. Sure you’ve been putting in the effort, but you just can’t seem to pull away. Or in light of outlasting them all, perhaps you’ve recently been reminded of a colleague or rival’s success or advancement. And it drives you nuts—good. It could even be an excruciating existential event in your life. Sometimes a Life Storm can turn out to be the axis that leverages a complete transformation in a man’s character. It can never be wrong to turn something bad into something good. And even if you are doing something good for the wrong reasons it is still a good thing.
The bottom line is to make a decision like your life depended on it. There will be no more big ideas, gung-ho enthusiasm and then eventual fade into nothingness. For once in your life you will make a man’s decision. A decision based on the hardcore, nonnegotiable honor to yourself and the Creator. You have a debt that you have to repay. It is a debt of the untapped potential you are keenly aware of that is smoldering within. You will repay this debt with interest many times over. And as a result justify your existence in this difficult and broken world of ours.
Maintain and develop all the power you can by taking responsibility for your life. Take ownership of your situation as it stands right now and as you hit the throttle each day going forward. It will benefit you by an order of magnitude to do so. Accept this challenge and it will change your life. In the long run you will become twice the man. Get out of your own way and get it done.
There will be no more energy wasted on blame. Never mind pointing fingers at others or wallowing in your past mistakes. These are a waste of time and will result in a loss of control. They will weaken your resolve. Focus instead on where you are headed and making constant progress. As obstacles appear you will work to overcome them. You will accept their existence and plan solely on victory.
The blame game then, is for the other guy and for the old you. Face it, shit happens to everyone. Whatever has happened or will happen to you is not unique. Your pain is no different than the pain of countless others in the past, present and future. Most men will look to blame others or circumstances for difficulties in their lives. Some with integrity will blame themselves when appropriate. But there is no time for blame anymore. There is only time for responsibility—the responsibility to fix, to resolve and to overcome.
Accept the fact that obstacles will never cease. This is simply the natural order and especially so for men of action. Use these problems as an indicator of your new velocity. Tell yourself explicitly that this is happening because I’m out here getting things done; the things in life that really matter to me and that I specifically chose to pursue.
And know that you are up to the task. As you handle each new challenge it will become a feather in your cap; another nugget in your evolving mind. Every time you overcome, it will add the armor and confidence to take on more. Eventually you will thrive and enjoy the challenges you must face to succeed. You will perform like a world class athlete, excel under pressure and make your life a playing field.
Establish Your Habits
Making a decision like no other time in your life is good. And taking the responsibility to maintain forward progress is good. But you are going to need to do something else to accelerate your progress; something which will allow you to pull away from your old Trajectory through the leverage of compounding. This something will be to establish your habits, embrace them and then never stop.
You’ve set the mental framework as the foundation. Now is the time for sheer will and perseverance. This is where the work comes in. You will now apply the habits necessary for success each and every day in your life forever more. Unfortunately, there is no one stroke of genius or single miracle to be found for most of us. The answer will be in the compounding of simple actions every day.
It is this unrelenting repetition that will create the jaw dropping transformation you are looking for; the simple decision to take deliberate action or make deliberate permanent change. Do what you know you need to do each day. And quit those things that have been holding you back as well. Just as important as pursuing the positive is replacing the negative.
Remove the shallow distractions from your life. Remove them and replace them with behavior that is congruent with your new ideal. There is no need to run away from weakness. This is what most men do. It is difficult and unsuccessful most of the time because it will remain on your mind by definition.
Instead you will run towards the pure and unadulterated power of your new destiny—the incredible destiny that you have deliberately engineered. Replace rather than avoid and you will blot out old tendencies. These tendencies will fade and then eventually disappear allowing you to cut through each day with a vengeance.
Keep in mind that as with compounding interest, progress will be slow at first. It will take some time for your new daily habits to add up. Decide up front to remain blind to the time and the effort. Continue your quest on pure principle. Use a man’s righteous anger if you have to.
Combine your anger with faith and you should be all set. You know what needs to be done. Even the complex things in life can be broken down into simple steps. Giant leaps are rarely necessary in action; they are instead made in your mind up front. It’s your life and you know what you are inherently capable of. Bear down and press ahead. Do not stop, never quit and you will not be denied.
Remember this rule gentlemen; action gives life to action. Never mind how you feel. How you feel is irrelevant. You’ve made a decision and you know what needs to be done. It doesn’t matter what your mental state is or whether you are tired. Feelings don’t matter and sleep is overrated. You will take action as a matter of principle and as a matter of faith. After all, your life is on the line here.
The old way of assigning feelings to fuel your actions has not worked. Men of action who get things done take action, pure and simple. You are not a unique snowflake with a uniquely difficult situation. Hell, here in the west and in most of the modern world we have it better than 99% of history.
Consider for a moment that for most of human history men have died from a simple infection we can cure today with an over the counter ointment or a bottle of pills. There are those who have lost everything to war or disaster; family, land, a life’s work and still excelled. Many have overcome much, much more than you will ever need to do. And they have done so without any of the resources available in modern life. Even today there are many men less fortunate than most that have overcome and led tremendous lives.
So there is nothing to complain about. There is only action to be had. Ignore your mental state and just get started. Do this every day and it will transform your life. All it takes is that first step each and every day. Fool yourself if you have to. Set an easy goal or select an easy task. Just do something relevant and then it will happen—action will give life to action.
It is just the natural order; just the manner in which we were created. Take advantage of this fact until it becomes a habit. Eventually you will intuitively know how to put yourself into an active state. You will become confident in your ability to do so and you will know you can continue indefinitely. When this hits you, the implicit self-knowledge that you now have what it takes, you’ll have double the energy and double the motivation.
This isn’t a win or lose situation or a comparison with others. But part of the key in life is to never stop moving. Many will begin with vigor and then fade away. You, however, will not stop and you will never quit. Imagine the possibilities. Imagine what you can accomplish. There is no boasting to be had or ego involved. It’s just a plain fact. Through decision, responsibility, habits and action you will outlast them all.
All the best,
