The focus here at Becoming a Force of Nature is on pursuing your very best and on achieving personal greatness. This is not a competition with others. There is no doubt, however, that many of us would take tremendous comparative satisfaction by living and finishing up in the High Country as I call it.
At the core it’s not about collecting bigger trophies or finishing ahead of someone else, but simply about developing yourself as you know you should. There is just something inherently good about doing the best with what the Creator has given you; and conversely, something wrong about wasted potential.
But if the thought of outlasting them all through sheer will and perseverance appeals to you the same as it does to me, then use it without reservation. If you are doing the right thing each day, there is something that just seems appropriate about the phrase “outlast them all.” It exemplifies the fact that you will not stop and will never quit. You are committed at the highest possible level.
I believe it is this commitment that is the key—because if your actions are just and righteous the Creator will ultimately reward that commitment. There are no guarantees of course. Just as there are no guarantees that staying true to one’s faith will lead to an easy life. But I believe that a man’s legitimate unyielding commitment is a quality that is favored by the natural order. And that more often than not, exceptional commitment can bend reality to a certain extent. Just as luck favors the prepared, so does fate favor the committed.
So center yourself and drop your stance, then press ahead and commit to outlasting them all.
Make a pact with yourself that you will improve every single day. This is now your primary goal. There will be no more zero days. You will go to bed each night in better health, fitter, stronger, faster, smarter and wealthier. You will become a better man for your woman and a better father to your children. But most importantly you will become a superior man for yourself, with every action you take in stubborn pursuit of your Life Mission and Life Vision.
Imagine the compounding effect over time. Even the most imperceptible of improvements will add up to significant changes as time passes. The key is to continue until you hit critical mass; until you begin to accumulate such momentum there will be no stopping you. To continue until fate and luck begin to bend in your favor.
Like with a lot of things, it’s easy to get started on something new and exciting. But ask yourself if you have what it takes to blindly forge ahead regardless? Just as with losing weight, for example, will you continue to deny yourself until you reach your goal? Will you be willing to ignore the scale so to speak and take action purely on principle? Are you willing to take comfort in the discomfort?
To continue with the diet comparison, you’ve got to be willing to practically starve yourself if you have to. There has to be a point in your life when you are willing to take it to the wall purely on conviction—like I always say, as if your life is on the line. And if you think about it, your life is on the line here. We are talking about becoming the very best you can be. About Becoming a Force of Nature and living life up in the High Country. This is the difference between really living as a man and just coasting along. Men were born to take action and achieve. They were not born to take the easy path and coast.
Focus on the big three: health, mind and finances. These are the foundation for personal greatness. And in the long run the only things a man can really control in his life. Get on top of the big three and watch as the rest of your life falls in line.
- Start by eating with purpose and precision
- Cut weight like a man so that you can execute at full speed each day
- Train to remain exceptionally fit for the long term
- Read every night without exception to develop your mind
- And develop a plan to become financially independent
All of these things are achievable. They key is to purposefully design your life and then take action. The big step is in the unwavering decision to do so. The genius is in the commitment to improving even just a little bit each day, confident that the days, weeks, months and years will compound until you finally get your way.
Take the Long View and Persevere
Right out of the gate be willing to go all the way; all the way to your grave as an old man if you have to. Make this decision and then close the window. Cross that rickety bridge over the deep chasm of ordinary men and then when you get to the other side burn it down. There will be no turning back. This is how you want to live your life from now on—in one direction. It will all be worth it as long as you are pursuing your Life Mission.
You will settle in for the long run and persevere. You will indeed outlast them all. Perhaps you won’t be the fastest or the strongest or the smartest, but there will be no stopping you. By definition then you cannot fail because you will never quit. At some point you will become the best version of you; and then the next day even better and the day after that better still.
Be prepared for difficulties and obstacles. Expect them. And expect them to keep coming. This is the natural order acting as wind resistance to your unrelenting Trajectory. Always remain objective in your perception and realize this is just the way things are. It will be your constant duty to flip or go around these obstacles and then turn them to your advantage. In any case you don’t have a choice, there is no turning back. You’ve chosen your path and relish your willingness and ability to handle it all.
There is something to be said for sheer will and perseverance. In the light of a worthy life it is indeed something special. It will put you on a higher plane. A plane where the air is pure, the sunshine is bright and you can go all day and then get up and do it again the next. You will carry yourself with an energy and verve that is rare among men. Those that meet you will realize this and be better for their interaction with you. And you will realize it as well and be your own best company.
It is a complicated and evolving world we live in—a world where the knowledge base and computing power double every 18-24 months. The pace of change is increasing and will continue to do so indefinitely. Chance and opportunity will thus favor the prepared mind.
As you read every evening, consider it an exercise in dynamism. Follow your interests, but also take some risks in the topics you choose. Bounce around a little bit. Find some blogs you enjoy and look for reading recommendations. Look for perhaps 5 or 6 different areas of interest and work your way through as many websites, books and podcasts as you can. Study these areas in depth until they become second nature and then repeat the process.
The core of your efforts will always be your Life Mission and becoming the very best you can be. This will never change. Your Life Vision and One Thing may, however. As you develop yourself over time and become more informed and sophisticated in your thinking, new ideas and opportunities may become apparent. If there is a better way then pursue it—this is dynamism in action.
Consider yourself a dynamic man from now on. Never stop learning and evolving. Keep your core principles in tight, but always strive to become better. Better and different. Do this and you will indeed outlast them all. As others fade away and slow down, you will begin to operate on a new level and then another after that.
This is the ultimate goal if you wish to outlast them all gentlemen. All that matters is that you finish strong. Do so and you will leave 99% of the population behind you. It doesn’t matter what your past or what your current situation, if you can finish at the top of your game that’s all a man can ask of himself. And I believe, all the Creator can ask as well.
He is well aware of our fallible nature and the broken world we inhabit. To finish strong in light of many mistakes and difficulties will make it all that much more glorious. Of course, better to keep it as simple as possible and head straight for the top. But, no one is disqualified from making an about face and doing the right thing at any point in their life. So ignore the past, drop the shallow distractions and do what you know is right. Get started and take action.
If you are a young man then ride the train of righteousness all the way to the end. There is no need to wait. Spare yourself the drama and always do what you know is right. Take advantage of the many years you have by taking the long view. There is no panic, but there should still be an urgency to begin your journey. Be patient and confident. Live life with the benefit of a clear conscience and slowly build your momentum.
For those of you who are a little older you’ve got the advantage of urgency and a straight line to the finish. Hopefully you have gotten tired of treading water and become much wiser over the years. These extra years of experience have likely hardened your character and will make commitment and focus that much easier. Take advantage of these things. Plan for the future but live in the moment. Enjoy yourself in the now as you head on up to the High Country, all obstacles be damned.
Deep down you know what you need to do. And I’m certain that in the dark of night you are well aware of the immense untapped potential buried deep within that has been bestowed upon you.
How about this for a plan—Design your Life Mission, your Life Vision and pick your One Thing.
Get started, take action and then never quit.
Decide you are going to outlast them all.
No matter what, take it to your grave that you will never quit pursuing your Ultimate Self.
Make it your essence that you will constantly improve, persevere, evolve as necessary and finish strong.
Do these things and no matter what happens it will be a life well lived and the best that a man can offer to himself and the Creator of the heavens.
Not a bad plan, not bad at all.
All the best,
