Create the ideal prototype for how you would like to carry yourself—design the best possible version of the future you. As with everything else, it all starts in your mind. You’ve got to see it before you can become it. You do have this choice and you do have this ability.
Take the time and entertain yourself with just how good you could be. And then get to work creating your masterpiece.
Whatever you end up with, make sure it includes a never say die, never stop and never quit attitude.
And then work to harden yourself and toughen up.
Consider your mental and physical toughness as a high priority from now on. Make it an essential part of your character and a core principle—see yourself as getting tougher and tougher.
To succeed over the long term will require guts, backbone and grit; no matter your situation and no matter your smarts. There’s no question that mental and physical toughness are key ingredients for success in this difficult and broken world.
So let us endeavor then to toughen you up.
Set the Bar High
It’s time to make yourself uncomfortable. It’s time for you to embrace the comfort of discomfort. Set the bar high and then get to work. You don’t need to do it all at once; the plan is to get a little bit better every day; even if that means just holding the line until hard becomes easy.
You know what it is you need to work on. A man knows where he is weak and where he needs to improve. Pick one area or a few and then raise the bar. Raise the bar and then hold your ground. If you should fall or backslide, get right back up and right back to it. Get right back to the new normal.
Don’t expect to be perfect. The goal is to get your overall Trajectory on an upward run. As long as you keep the pressure on and always jump right back in you are headed in the right direction. Be honest with yourself and hold your feet to the fire. Redouble your efforts and harden your will.
What you’re working to do here is increase your capacity. You will stretch your limits and then hold the line. Just as with resistance training, you will tear at your outer edges and then naturally acclimate to the new standard.
You will find the time and You Can Do More. Put your life on the line for once—not in terms of your personal safety or health, but who it is you want to become. At some point it’s worth taking off the gloves. At some point it’s worth letting it all hang out and going for it.
So raise the bar, harden yourself until it becomes easy and then raise the bar again. What you’ll find is that as you slowly ratchet up and refine your character, each improving aspect of who you are will begin to bleed over into the others.
And then one day as you wrap things up from another exciting excursion into your pursuits it will suddenly dawn on you; you have become tireless. You’ll be able to go all day everyday. You’ll only become tired when your work is done and it’s time to rest. And when the next morning rolls around, it will be second nature to just turn it on and go full throttle again.
Keep at it and Make the Journey Its Own Reward. Enjoy the process. Enjoy the new you. As it all becomes instinct, a synchronicity of sorts will begin to accrue. You will begin to find your way. You will begin to find your center.
All the energy and focus you need will be right there and available. What used to be hard will become easy and you’ll begin to see the Light.
You will begin to see your Life’s Destiny.
Work to become world class at the Willing Acceptance of external events. In other words, do not let difficulties, circumstances or people over which you have no control affect your morale and your state of mind.
Make this Stoic principle a core part of your character and combined with Right Action, you will indeed become one hell of a Force of Nature. Life will suddenly become much easier because almost nothing will be able to touch you.
This is easier said than done of course, but the better you become at Willing Acceptance, the more reserves you will have and the tougher you will be. An adversary who is unaffected by emotion and has complete control over his faculties will endure and eventually get his way.
Let the disappointments and trials you encounter pass through you like the wind through your hands. Since they are of external origin and outside of your control, you will simply accept their reality without prejudice or emotion. It is what it is, as it is said.
Of course, none of us are robots and extreme difficulty or tragedy can certainly affect a man and break him down for a time. But to the best extent possible, make it a point to willingly accept your circumstances and then turn you attention to taking the proper action.
And if there is nothing you can do to make things better, then you’ve always got Righteous Defiance as a fall back—you can always continue to do everything right, related or not, simply for its own sake. You can work to put yourself in the strongest possible position. And this too can be enabled through Willing Acceptance.
One never knows what the future will hold. Better to be prepared than sorry. And of course, the natural order being what it is, fate plays favorites with those who have made the effort and commitment to prepare.
So you will be smart and sharpen your axe. You will endeavor to never waste any of your energy and capacity through the Willing Acceptance of external events. And you will move to take Right Action as soon as possible.
There will be no gnashing of teeth and no submersion into the waters of negative emotion, for even the toughest man will falter when he runs out of energy. You will not fall into this trap. Instead you will turn quickly and take the steps necessary to handle whatever needs to be handled.
As with any skill, practice will make perfect. Use the annoyances and challenges of everyday life as your testing ground. Work to let everything pass through you as water through your hands and then move to make things right.
And when you find yourself negatively affected by something, simply repeat the principle “Willing Acceptance” in your mind or even out loud. Tell your mind what it needs to hear often enough and you will make it your essence.
Eventually it will simply become a reflex; it will become an echo in your mind whenever a challenge presents itself.
You will be unaffected, you will take action and you will become one tough hombre.
The simplest step of all in your quest to Toughen Up is to simply stop:
- Stop doing things that make you weak
- Stop it with the shallow distractions.
- And stop giving in.
Eliminate weakness from your life and you will surpass 95% of your competition. And you will also clear a path for the best of you to become manifest. Imagine never again taking a step backwards. Kill your weaknesses and almost by default all you can do is only get better. If you get up and do nothing but take Right Action each day there is no way you can’t improve and harden yourself.
Give up shallow distractions such as television, inebriation, junk food and pornography and you will become twice the man overnight. If, once and for all, you make a man’s decision and close the window to these vices, it will become a weight off your shoulders and it will set you free. It will simplify your life and allow for full time laser like focus. You’ll get sharper, faster and tougher.
And finally, stop giving in; giving in to difficulty, to people and to yourself. Make Not Quitting Reason Enough. If you are doing what you know is right then keep it simple and just don’t stop. Ignore your emotions, ignore the time, ignore the effort and ignore the cost. Just keep on keeping on and let the chips fall where they may. Overwhelm Your Circumstances.
If you’re acting with Virtue and conducting yourself with Excellence, then eventually things will work themselves out. They have to, because you are in congruence with the natural order and all that is good.
Learn to say no to yourself.
Get out of your own damn way. A man devoid of weakness, shallow distractions and who will Outlast Them All is a man to be reckoned with; a man with a path in front of him that is clear of self-defeating behaviors; and a man who can step steadfastly forth each day into the realm of personal excellence.
Self-denial along with Right Action can have no other result but to toughen you up and lift you to a higher plane.
So Toughen Up then and deny yourself.
Develop a steely countenance. Harden yourself and sharpen your edge.
Combine these attributes with Virtue and you can’t go wrong. In the long run you’ll become a man’s man and Achieve Personal Greatness.
You will walk around each day with a weight of character that emits positive energy and exudes power.
Men will innately respect you; they will see that without a doubt that you own your shit. And women will have no choice but to be instinctively attracted. They will sense at the deepest level that you have what they need.
But most importantly, you will gain your own respect. You will Enjoy Your Own Company and it will be entertaining just to be you.
Set the bar high.
Employ Willing Acceptance to all external events.
And deny yourself.
Simple, but not easy. But then there wouldn’t be any glory if it was easy. Victory and achievement become worthwhile only if they are earned—earned through vision, effort, will and perseverance.
Reap the glory that is yours to be had.
All the best,
